On August
22, 1978, USS Whipple FF-1062 in the South China Sea came across this 60 foot
boat with 417 Vietnamese refugees. In already heavy seas and an approaching
storm, the decision was made to bring all people aboard Whipple. They were
turned over to UN refugee officials in Hong Kong a few days later. This was
considered one of the first large scale rescues of at sea Vietnamese refugees.
於1978年8月22日，美國海軍惠普爾FF-1062在中國南海碰到這個60英尺的船有417名越南難民。在已經波濤洶湧的大海和一個即將到來的風暴，該決定是為了讓所有的人登上惠普爾。他們被移交給聯合國難民官員在香港幾天後。這被認為是海上的越南難民的第一個大規模的救援行動之一。
