LOS
ANGELES CLERK EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Los Angeles,
CA, Clerk Richard Wei was honored with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor earlier
this month from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations. In accepting the
award, Wei joins more than 1,800 elite American citizens who also have been
honored by this organization.
The Ellis Island Medal of Honor — recognized by the U.S. Congress — exemplifies hard work, self-improvement and community service. Recipients’ names are read into the “Congressional Record” each year.
Born in Saigon and a descendent of a Chinese family, Wei fled the Vietnam War and resettled in Los Angeles. “My experience with war and displacement gave me insight on the important connection between a country’s social system and the welfare of its population,” he said.
Strongly committed to serving his community, he founded the Sino-American Philatelic Center in 1995. “I wanted to further Chinese culture, enhance U.S.-China cultural exchanges and support Asian-American rights and interests,” he said.
Wei’s organization designs and produces covers and commemorative cards for major events marking U.S.-China relations, including visits by heads of state and government, anniversaries of major national events and art exhibitions. Each commemorative cover includes historical events that describe the evolution of cultural exchanges between America and China and the development of the Chinese community in the U.S.
Wei’s creations have become part of the Smithsonian Institution’s collections, as well as the National Postal Museum and the White House Foundation. Proceeds from the sale of first-day covers have benefitted China’s Hope Project, assisting thousands of schools in poverty-stricken areas.
